LIFE SKETCH OF ALICE SUSAN HARPER TOOLSON

Alice Susan Harper was born 18 January, 1865, at Smithfield, Cache,Utah. Her parents, Richard Harper and Susanne Faulkner Harper, moved from Salt Lake City in October, 1864, three months prior to Alice's birth. As a child she was full of life and energy and also very studious and maintained these characteristics throughout her life.

Her father's family was a large family consisting of one boy and eight girls. As she grew older she was always ready and willing to assist her father in obtaining a livelihood for the family by helping him with his outdoor work whenever the occasion might require.

She obtained her education in the district schools of Smithfield and the Brigham Young College at Logan. After graduating she taught school for several years, very successfully in Smithfield and was also a teacher and a leader in social ways. She was active in religious, social and civic affairs having been a member of the school board of Smithfield for seven years. She also held the office of secretary and teacher in the Sunday School. She was one of the first presidents of the Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Association and also president of the Ladies Literary Society.

She was married to Lorenzo Toolson 22 Oct 1886, in the Logan Temple. She was the mother of ten children, one of whom preceded her in death.

In her home she reigned as queen, having a kind but commanding personality, to which her children took pleasure in yielding obedience. This made home a heavenly refuge for her family, and at the time of her death she was assisting her husband in managing the Union Mercantile establishment. Her life, though short, was spent for the advancement of her fellowmen.

She passed suddenly from this life 20 Nov 1914, a few weeks prior to her 50th birthday. Her three sons labored as missionaries in the British Mission. Her children were all married in the LDS temples.
